2016 Ballon D'or
The 2016 Fifa ballon D'or is scheduled to hold tonight at the Fifa headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. The event is the highest awarding recognition in the football sphere. It recognizes the best talents paraded all year round in the game of football.
In the race this year, are Argentina and Barcelona striker Lionel Messi, Portugese and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and a first timer, Brazil and Barcelona's Neymar.
Lionel Messi, is targeting his unprecedented 5th ballon d'or title, with Cristiano Ronaldo equally targeting his 4th ballon d'or title.
The question however lies on who is the favourite to win the title.
Lionel Messi is widely tipped as the favorite for the award after a success laden year that saw him win LA Liga, Champions League, Copa del Rey and club world Cup, also contributing to over 120 goals scored by his team barcelona, with the help of Neymar, and Saurez, a feat not achieved by any other group of forward/strikers in the world.Former Barca captain Carles Puyol believes Messi is the clear frontrunner for the award and backed the Argentine to rack up yet more honours in the years to come. “You never know what can happen, but it would be a big surprise and injustice if Messi didn’t win the Ballon d’Or,” Puyol told Barcelona’s official website.By comparison, it was a turbulent season for Ronaldo — world player of the year in 2008, 2013 and 2014 — and Real Madrid as they played second fiddle to their arch rivals despite a contribution of 54 goals in 52 games from their Portuguese talismanNeymar may appear an outsider for the award this time, but the 23-year-old Brazilian is emerging as the main threat to end the Messi-Ronaldo Ballon d’Or reign.the event airs at 6pm Nigerian time.
