A goal from Diego Costa, was more than enough to seal victory for Chelsea, and see them climb to the top of the EPL table. Middlesbrough, who were at home at the Riverside, were hopeful for a win in order to move out of the relegation zone, and also secure at least a goal; their first against Chelsea in ten years.
In what seemed like a walk-over for in-form Chelsea, whom had not conceded a goal since their 3-0 defeat at Arsenal in September, the match started with a rather sluggish Chelsea struggle for domination for the first 25 minutes of the game. Chelsea continued at this pace, until Pedro earned the first clear-cut opportunity, firing a shot which was narrowly tipped over by a soaring Victor Valdes. This continued with a host of missed opportunities for both sides. Diego Costa's goal in the 40th minute, became the only goal of the match, and hence sealing victory for the Blues.
