McILroy Pulls Out Of Rio Olympics Over Zika Fears

Rory McILroy announced on Wednesday that he would not be attending the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, because of his concerns about the Zika virus. His announcement, came at a time when other high-profile athletes are pulling out of the Games, set to begin in August.

McILroy's decision, is a major blow for the Olympics, and not simply because he is a former World No. 1 and winner of four majors. McILroy, 27, is the highest-ranked European in the World at No.4, and up until Wednesday, he was one of the few high-profile golfers who seemed committed to competing in Rio. He had earlier gone through the troubles of being vaccinated as requested for all travelling to Brazil for the Games, said ;
"Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is condidered low, it is a risk nonetheless, and a risk I am unwilling to take".
With this development, it is likely that other top athletes will withdraw from the 2016 Olympics.
