The World'd Football governing body; FIFA, has announced it's plans to increase the number of teams participating in the World Cup, from 32 to 48. The new team structure, will be unveiled during the 2026 World Cup finals, as 48 countries will be represented at the competition.

FIFA president, Infantino, has earlier expressed his optimism and hope that FIFA's ruling council will agree to expand the number of teams participating in the 2016 World Cup, playing in 16 groups of three teams; this new team structure, allows for 1 team to go through to the last 32 (the knockout stage ). This new formation, will also see 80 matches in total being played during he 32-day tournament.
FIFA's decision, has sparked outrage from different quarters, especially from the Spanish Football League, La Liga, who are planning to take FIFA to court over it's decision. According to Sky Sports, a senior source from the league, is quoted as saying that "they will do everything possible to reverse the decision.
La Liga, has earlier warned FIFA president Gianni Infantino, that they would take legal action if they went ahead with the plans. The Spanish Football body, is saying they were not consulted before the decision was taken, especially as the new format which kicks in from 2016, will see number of players taking part in the World Cup increase by 50%. "We are not happy at all. We are providing extra players but we have not been consulted. We are looking a ways in which we can challenge today's decision" - the source is quoted as saying.
